Someone said in a review that the lighting was lazy, but I think it was symbolic and melodramatic to highlight the internalized feelings of that year. Absolutely award winning and pure talent and goes for the rest of the cast The acting is impeccable, Jeanette's character blew me away- how her anxiety is portrayed, the facial expressions, the way her persona changes. I for one am glad I kept going and I’m pretty sure although this won’t be for everyone, if you enjoy the first episode you will be gripped. I certainly didn’t feel this was being done in Cruel Summer to satisfy a particular agenda, the mix seemed utterly normal. Star Trek right back in the sixties has more diversity than most productions these days and NOBODY complained!. I really will give up if the same anti woke brigade start slating this because it has a diversity of ethnicities. It must be a burden to have studied media etc as it appears to ruin a lot of enjoyment we lesser mortals in our ignorance get. It seems the review forum will be burdened by the usual anti this and anti that. The acting /casting is excellent and the diversity of scene settings adds extra. The whole production is skilful in its goal of achieving the drama that always has us guessing who, what, why, when? as well as predicting the narrative but then thwarted as twists and turns emerge. The by now trend of flip flopping from different time periods with the usual back stories really assists the intrigue to develop at a faster pace than the alternative sequential storytelling. It is however more than that, it rapidly transgresses into its niche as a psychological thriller. Admittedly I had to check the target audience which doesn’t specify YA, but I’m pretty sure this will have a massive appeal to that demographic. I was about to switch off when things took an upturn to maintain a slither of interest and then the upturns continued to produce a really gripping first episode. seemed like the usual teenage angst that personally is not my thing.
